In “Hotel room suicide: Las Vegas and Clark County” the authors study the link between suicide and hotel room usage in the areas of Vegas and Clark County which is right outside of Las Vegas. They chose this site because of its large number of hotel rooms as well as its significantly high suicide rate. What they also found through their research, guests outside of Clark County had a lowered suicide risk whereas residents of Clark County were increased. John D’Agata, author of About a Mountain and these authors have the drive for information and statistics in common. And although some of the information they are searching for is the same, a lot of it is quite different. However, both this article and About a Mountain would be nothing without its informational and supporting facts. They each also take multiple factors of each of their subjects into account. Such as, the number of hotel rooms in Clark County in “Hotel room suicide: Las Vegas and Clark County” or the amount of nuclear waste that might be stored in Yucca mountain in About a Mountain. This article is a significant help and major source to my research question: Las Vegas was characterized as one of America’s unhappiest cities, as well as, one of the nation’s top suicide rates. Why is one of the most sought after vacation destination, linked to such negative statistics? The information researched and given in this article is the exact information I need in order to solve my question and retrieve some answers. I will use this research to further my questioning as well and go deeper into the issue on why these suicides are occurring and why so frequently.
